So now what Mr. President? Because we can not have more of the same.

Dear President Barack Obama:

I hold  and cherish the citizenship of 2 great countries, The United States of America and Canada.  I am very grateful for this opportunity.  For the first time in my life I decided to write a letter to a politician because I feel the world is on the cusp of greatness.  The energy that I feel and hope you do too is palpable.

By the time you finish reading this letter you will feel my passion for change.  And you will realize that I like millions of others are looking for you to be this person who will lead this change.

I would like to congratulate you on delivering a very thought provoking inaugural address. Unlike some, I was proud and grateful that it wasn’t full of clips and sound bites.  I watched in awe the reactions of the audience. I cherished how they responded.  Not with the usual bravado and cheering.  But for the most part they stood in reflective solitude as your great words bellowed from the dais.  It did not mean people were not moved.  It meant people were listening with their ears and hearts and looking for guidance.  Wondering what they could do to make themselves, their home and planet a better place.

I am grateful for your conviction of change.  Looking for solutions rather than fighting the problems.  I look forward to the  genius of our nations to finding the solutions to our fiscal and energy problems.  Thereby leading and showing the world that change is possible.

Because we can not have more of the same.

However I fear I still hear that sucking sound.  You know the one.  The war machine and bankers that has controlled the interest of our country and the world for the past 70 years.  The one that invites, encourages you and helps you as its friend.  And before long has sucked you in and spit you out as another crony to do its bidding.

I am afraid the silent majority has viewed this movie many times. We understand your ideology but we must see your inspired action to truly believe.

Because we want to believe.

But we can not have more of the same.

That is why I am writing to you.  I felt the energy that was present.  My goose bumps were the constant reminder.  And I  want to believe that you are the steward of this ship.  I hope this vessel that rise with the tide of change and travel on a new course.

However  I must question some of your choices.

It was Einstein whose definition follows said, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Why then is your economic team (Lawrence Summers(former Treasury Secretary and former chief economist of The World Bank, Paul Volker(former head of the Federal Reserve) , Timothy Geithner (former President of The Reseve Bank of New York) made up of the same members who lead us into this financial fiasco in the first place.

You must remember that that the gathering of these clouds didn’t just start during the last year but has been in place since World War II.  The war machine understood its power and how to use it to increase its wealth.  The bankers realized they could do the same by reneging , in 1971, on its promise to pay its debt in gold. Like our constitution states.

Their goal was to make and enforce the US dollar as the worlds currency.  Now that this currency is commonplace in society how can we ensure its place among the many as opposed to the few.

I hope these familiar faces are around to lead us out of this mess.  Not because they have past experience but because they have the solutions to fix their problems that they helped create.  We can not have more of the same and, like Einstein said, have a different result.

It is a great blessing that time has healed some wounds.  That our nation has become stronger by not being fearful.  But by realizing the injustices and shouting,”No more.”  And as you specifically pointed out,`… why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.`

Now as you continue to read my words I realized that wounds are healed in our country.  It is now time to heal the wounds of the world.  It is time to stand up and be accountable for our actions and injustices in this world.

Mr President do you think that our so called enemies awoke one day and decided to be angry, violent and anti-American hating?

Or could it have been the numerous injustices piled on top of each other. With no one listening to their plight.  No one seemingly caring.  They grew tired of the pain that was inflicted.  Their anger building.  Until one day their volcanoe of rage erupted. The lava of their hatred now flows from one generation to another in many parts of the world.

Jesus said,`Love thy neighbour“.

We must truly understand their hatred.  We have to put ourselves in their shoes.  The cycle must stop.  We need to embrace  them with love and compassion instead of firing  bullets and launching bombs.

Listening and compassion is the key to deflect the venom that is spewed from their mouths.  Although venomous and painful to hear.  We need to feel this pain. Without the venom no antidote can be found.

But we can not have more of the same.

We must remember that although slavery in our country was abolished hundreds of years ago.  It was the way this country was built and prospered.

We must awaken.  Open our eyes and hearts.  Come to the realization that slavery is still alive and strong.  That this nation and the west has prospered off the work of millions of people around the world.  They are not on the plantations in our backyard but on the plantations, sweatshops, mines, around the world. We have enslaved people by an economic plight as John Perkins realized in his book CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN(www.economichitman.com).

I look forward to you fulfilling your promise as you recited yesterday,

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

I can not even begin to  imagine your pressure. But rest assured that you are not alone. You do not have to be Atlas.  The weight of this world is on your shoulders. However for the first time in history there is a chance to have everyday people from all over the world willing to lend a hand. To support this weight. Ensuring that you will not be crushed by this heavy load.

But we can not have more of the same.

Mr President you must have noticed and felt this embrace.  The millions of people that gathered in Washington.  The millions more gathered around radios, TVs and the internet through out the world that want this change and these wounds healed.

We have come to realize that although we shouldn`t be shameful of our lifestyle.  Others will not want the same.  And we must not enforce our beliefs.

The only thing we know for sure is that every man, women and child wants, as you elequently stated,”the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.”  You are intelligent enough to understand that these words should be allowed to be embraced by everyone on this beautiful planet.

The time for competition is over.  There are no more winners or losers.  Right or wrongs. Matt Kahn a Spiritual Teacher whose words echo this feeling said,

I could either choose to be right and ignore the entire world around me, or I could choose to be in peace, and invite the world into this opening heart of mine, that only wants to be loved, appreciated, and free from the burden of needing to decide if anyone, including myself, is acting right or wrong…I know that I`ll never be right, without someone else being labeled wrong…

Although I have lived a selfish life in the past. I have begun to realize that only love, peace and compassion for myself, my family , my neighbours is true to living the way God and The Universe has desired.  The true teachings of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, Lao Tze has inspired a growing minority.  They feel this energy and are working with love and peace to make themselves and their world a better place. I believe a leader could you unite us all no matter where we are along on this journey.  To inspire us .  To teach us not just with words but with actions of love and peace.  That in order for all of us to reach the promise land we must assist, learn , help, share with each other every step of the way up the beautiful mountain of life.

I was not around to see or hear the greats like JFK, Churchill or Dr. King.  But what I witnessed yesterday for the first time in my life was someone who captured his audience not with sound bites but with the same conviction of the past greats.  The words spoken seemed to come from your make up, your fabric, your very being.  For that I am grateful.

But now we await for truth and honesty.  The very words that are always hidden from the public must be allowed to see the light of day.  Inspired action will follow.  Imagine what it would be like if we all had the freedom “to pursue our full measure of happiness.” It is up to you Mr. President.  This change can be swift.

But we can not have more of the same.

Learning…Enjoying…Sharing

David Slocombe
